Golden Star Wassa Mine Energy & Carbon Management Program

Golden Star Wassa Mine Energy & Carbon Management Program

Wassa is a gold mine located in south-western Ghana. Started as a surface mining operation, in early 2018 Wassa transitioned into an underground-focused operation.

Our initial engagement with Golden Star (acquired by Chifeng in 2022) was to validate the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in their annual sustainability report. With an increasing desire to understand and manage their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, EELO Solutions was retained to develop the Wassa Mine energy and carbon management program. In addition, we support the site and corporate sustainability teams in setting targets and building internal capacity.

Through desktop review and a site visit, we developed energy and carbon baselines and presented the results in a custom-built dynamic tool to track and visualize the outputs based on key metrics including intensity, emissions scopes, areas, and end use. To evaluate energy and carbon reduction opportunities, we conducted a mine and plant energy assessment and worked with site personnel to evaluate and prioritize next steps.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mapped energy and cost data sources and developed a framework to automate data collection

  • Developed a energy and carbon analysis tool and transitioned the tool to the client

  • Increased site energy and greenhouse gas literacy and encouraged site personnel to lead energy and emissions reduction priority projects
